Helping Product Design students explore careers, reflect on their strengths and develop confidence in their next steps.
The Design Pathways Student Hub was developed as a dedicated careers resource for Product Design students at SETU. It responds to a simple but important question: where can product design take you?
For students, the transition from studio-based learning into professional practice can feel open, exciting and uncertain. Product Design offers a wide range of possible directions, from industrial design and product development to UX/UI, service design, healthcare, sustainability, innovation, business and postgraduate study. The aim of the Pathways Student Hub is to make these possibilities more visible, accessible and meaningful.
Rather than presenting careers as a fixed or linear route, the hub encourages students to explore design pathways as evolving journeys. It brings together alumni insights, industry perspectives, work experience guidance, Erasmus opportunities and practical reflection tools. These resources help students connect the skills they are developing in the studio, including research, concept development, prototyping, communication and critical thinking, with real graduate outcomes and future opportunities.
The hub is structured around four key stages: Explore, Reflect, Develop and Take Action. Students begin by exploring alumni pathways, graduate stories and industry voices. They then use guided worksheets and planning tools to reflect on their interests, strengths and possible directions. From there, they begin to shape a personal pathway, identifying areas of design practice, further study or professional experience that align with their ambitions.
A key value of the project is that it positions career development as part of the design learning process. It asks students to apply the same reflective and exploratory mindset they use in studio projects to their own future. In doing so, the hub supports students to make more informed decisions, build confidence and recognise the breadth of opportunities available through design.
The Pathways Student Hub also highlights the importance of lived examples. Alumni stories and industry voices allow students to see how others have moved from college into different areas of practice. These examples help make career possibilities more tangible, while also showing that professional pathways often change over time.
Ultimately, the project is about helping students move from uncertainty to agency. It gives them a structured space to explore what comes next, while recognising that each student’s direction will be personal, flexible and shaped through experience. As a careers resource, Pathways supports students not only to understand where Product Design can take them, but to begin actively designing their own future.
