Otter: Designing Newborn Care for Unreliable Conditions

The Otter Newborn Warmer is a conductive warming system designed to prevent and treat hypothermia in newborns in low-resource hospitals. Its battery, intuitive controls and seamless polycarbonate bassinet respond to unreliable electricity, limited training and infection-control needs.
Developed by Design that Matters, with manufacturing led by Vietnamese medical-device company MTTS, Otter shows how medical technology can respond to the realities of its intended context.
Why I saved this: I was struck by the aim to make the product “hard to use wrong.” Power failures, cleaning, transport, trust and mother-child interaction are treated as core design requirements. For design students, Otter demonstrates why understanding the full use environment matters as much as technical performance.
