Exploring Manufacturing Through Function

ProductionInspiration is a free search tool containing more than 4,000 production technologies. Rather than beginning with a familiar manufacturing process, users select the function they need to perform, such as joining, cooling, polishing, separating or embedding, and the state of the material involved.

The platform was developed by AULIVE, an innovation organisation led by Simon Dewulf that creates systematic tools for product, process and concept development.

For students, it offers a useful way to explore unfamiliar processes and consider manufacturing earlier in concept development, rather than selecting a process only after the form has been designed.

Worth considering: Could an unfamiliar production method change the form, function or feasibility of your concept?

Design themes: Manufacturing, materials and processes, design for production, innovation tools and concept development.
